Our Voyage

We created this group for two simple reasons; we like to sing and we think other people should like it too. I remember laying in bed in 2021 thinking, wouldn’t it be cool if people got together and sang? Not for practice. Not for a concert. Not for money. Just to enjoy being around each other? At the time I was getting my graduate degree in conducting at Missouri State and I was already involved in *plenty* of choirs. I didn’t want to add another choir rehearsal to my plate. But I loved singing with people and making music, so I reached out to one of my best friends, Shawn Vomund, and brought up the idea of getting some people together to sing some songs. “That sounds amazing. Let’s do it.”

So we got some of our friends together and picked a night to order pizza and sing. It started with about 12 people. A year later and we now have over 350 members and each event is standing room only. It was (and is) amazing how much the community enjoys gathering and singing.

Our goal for this group is to bring people together with sea shanties and songs. Not in the way that requires professional musicians, reading sheet music, or concert tickets, but by inviting all members of our community to gather, support local businesses, and discover their own voice amongst friends. These events are free to attend. The music is easy to learn. The memories we make by singing together will last a lifetime. You don’t need an ocean or a ship to feel the camaraderie and spirit of these timeless melodies. All you need is to gather, drink, and sing.
